25-30 m; rounded crown; stout trunk reaching 2 m in diameter;

10-25 x 8-15 cm; crowded at the tip of twigs; oboval, more or less oblong; base auricled, apex rounded (with often 3 small lobes); deeply cut, with 7-10 lobes each side, most of them lobulate; lustrous dark green, slightly rough above (some sessile, fasciculate trichomes, sometimes solitary and bulbous ones); greyish tomentose, soft beneath (tufts of stipitate fasciculate trichomes, with some solitary and simple uniseriate ones); 6-9 pairs of lateral veins, few tertiary ones; petiole hairy, 0.2-0.8 cm long, hairy;

male flowers on 5-8 cm catkins, drooping, golden brown; in June;

acorn 2 cm; enclosed 1/3 to 1/2 by cup; cup with short stalk, and broad, appressed, pubescent scales; maturing in 1 year;

hardy; all types of soils; fast growing;
