China (Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi) ; Vietnam ; Northeast Myanmar; Thailand ; from 1200 m to 2700 m;

1.5-3 m, but reaches sometimes 10 m;

7-12 cm long, 1-4 cm wide; evergreen; oval-lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate; apex acuminate, base cuneate and oblique; margin mostly entire, or more or less slightly toothed near apex; glabrous, shiny above; somewhat farinose or glaucescent, glaucous below; midrib not impressed above; 10-15 pairs of secondary veins; petiole glabrous, 0.5-2 cm long;

pistillate inflorescences solitary, 3-4 cm long, at axils of young shoots with 5-10 flowers ; flowers in April-May; 3 styles;

acorn oblong-ovoid, 1-1.7 cm long, 0.8-1.2 cm wide, glabrous, apically rounded and sometimes depressed; enclosed for 1/2 in cupule; cupule 0.6-1 cm long, 1-1.3 cm wide, outside glabrous or nearly so, sericeous inside, with 5-7 concentric rings entire or crenate; scar slightly convex; stylopodium persistent; maturing in 2 years;

not quite hardy; all types of soils; cultivated in Great Britain;
